Why Do You Succeed?

Happy Monday! I am a super optimistic and happy camper this morning because I'm approximately 12 hours from officially picking my new apartment! :D I can't wait to start this new adventure (although I will admit I'm super nervous!!) and call Boston home. We saw some great apartments yesterday and we'll get to see a ton more today and, by the end of the day, I should be able to pick one. I've found two that I'm pretty happy with out of the six that I've seen so far.

Well, more on the apartment hunt later. Today, we're motivating! So success is always an important factor in life. Whatever success is to you, without it, you will feel defeated. When you feel successful, you want to go on, even through the bad. So....

Why do you succeed?

Vacation's All I Ever Wanted...

Disclaimer: I wrote this post last week and my stupid phone wouldn't post it :/

Sometimes you just need to get out! I just don't really want to be in Tucson anymore. My friends and, especially, Ryan are keeping me there, but to decompress from the soul sucking southwest, I'm taking vacation! This means I'm back to blogging like crazy and hanging out on the beach in Southern California!! I'm here this weekend for the Elevate blog conference and can't wait to meet some of the amazing women that will be here.

This far, my trip has consisted of driving for 8 hours to get here, all made better by my road trip crack, aka Starbucks!

Yup, that's a venti!

Today, I get to spend some time with one of my best friends, Sarah. I originally thought I was going to stay with her while here, but because of extenuating circumstances, I booked a hotel. Thank you, Hotels.com for coming through in a HUGE way! I'm staying at the Hyatt, which is ridiculous! I don't feel classy enough to be staying here... Seriously... Look at my room and my view!

Even the bathroom has art!! And it's so perfect for how I feel today :)

And because my office mate, Sam, and I are absolutely obsessed with Starbucks and Chipotle, I couldn't have a vacation without the Chipotle...

It also helped that I knew that I could get a meal under $10...

What does the rest of the weekend hold? I don't know! Why not follow me on Instagram to find out. Normally I'd link that lovely word, but since I don't get free Internet here, I'm writing this from my phone, so if you want to find me on Instagram, scroll on up to find me on that lovely social media platform.

Failure Is Not The Only Option

Sometimes, I feel like I keep failing and failing and I can't make anything work. Maybe it's just me, but some projects just seem to fail time and time again... When I feel like that, I listen to some Sugarland. Now, if you hate country music, this might not be a good option for you, but you can at least listen to the lyrics...

One of my favorite songs by them is Little Miss. Seriously one of the most motivational songs I know. What songs keep you motivated?

Creative Outlets

I've always been a creative person. I've always loved making things, crafting... you name it, I've done it. From quilling to needle working. From resin to metal. I've done it all, but I landed in fold formed and wire wrapped jewelry. Why? Because it inspires me.

I get to sit down and make something beautiful out of something so cold. It's me and a piece of metal. I get to fight with the metal, pound out my frustrations.... And you know what? When I do this, it really helps! I really feel like I get to take all of my anger out on something that will never hurt me back (okay, that's not entirely true... I've burned and cut myself many a times) and at the end, I get something beautiful!

Sticking with my love of Project Runway from Friday's post, I found my motivation from Michelle a couple of episodes back. She said something that really struck a cord with me...

What inspires you to do what you do?

Everything I Learned About Running a Creative Business, I Learned from Project Runway

Okay, seriously long title, but it's true! Okay, maybe not everything... If you've ever sat and watched Project Runway (and believe me, I do religiously), you can pick up some seriously great tips from the judges and the contestants on how to run a successful wearable art business, because contrary to what Nina said last week, fashion is art! It's definitely more practical art because you gotta wear it, but it's art! So, what have I learned?

via

You can't just make excessively artistic pieces. You also need to make some ready to wear stuff.

via
Oh, Laura Kathleen.... No, but really. I can make tons of art pieces, but these only cater to a certain clientele. Most people can't afford to drop $300 on the reg for a necklace... So what do I do? I make ready to wear pieces that compliment the expensive art pieces. And yea, you'll get people who will tell you that your wearable art is "just a craft," but who cares?? Most of these people are just mad because they don't understand that painting is not the only form of art. Okay, I'll stop ranting about my personal beef....

You have to defend your work. If you love it, even in the face of other people hating it, it shows you are a true artist with passion.

Hell, someone, somewhere will like it just as much as you do! Maybe even more-so. If you love what you produce, who cares what Nina says? Michelle, my personal favorite from this season is kicking butt! Nina told her over and over again how horrible she was and then she goes and turns around and makes this:

via
Like it or not, this girl's got skillz. She had to defend many pieces on the runway this season, but she's showing at fashion week and there's not doubting that she has talent. She has a vision and I personally love her style. Some people won't. Whatever! There are some people in this world that you will NEVER be able to sell to. Don't worry about them!

Sometimes, you need to take a step back and say, "who would even wear that?!?!"

Even though my stuff it's art, it's wearable art. If no one would be willing to put it on and walk around in it, it ain't leaving my shelf. Like this...

via

These remind me of dinosaur plates for some reason... Who would let anyone walk out of the house in that outfit??

Some people will never understand your vision...

via

But some people won't care if they never understand your vision. Some of them just find you interesting!

Like Patricia! The judges don't get her at all!!

via
I don't always get her stuff either, but I love her spunk!
Somehow, even though they don't get her aesthetic, they (and I mean Zach and Heidi, Nina, you're just mean) think she's interesting. They don't know if they like her stuff, but they're interested!

Be original!

No one wants to see you copying other people's work. Maybe a nod here and there, but if you directly copy someone else's work, no one will really respect you. You have to have a consistent voice that shows who you are as an artist, even if it's a crazy voice (Santino, I'm talking to you even though I love you!)

What places do you take life lessons from?

Anchors Away

Happy Belated Wednesday! I will start this by saying part of the reason this is late is due to the decline of Etsy and their lack of monitoring what pieces are handmade and what aren't. I'm seriously concerned when I see the same exact anchor stack about 80 times in the course of 100 search results for anchors... That being said, I have found a really nice spread of lovely, unique anchor jewelry for you for today because, well, it's getting closer and closer to summer and I'm so happy that it's getting warmer around here! I'm absolutely in love with all eight of these pieces!

1) Hand Stamped Anchor Ring from JL by Janet Leigh
2) Anchor Wrap Bracelet by Happy Go Licky
3) Personalized Anchor Necklace by Silver Lotus Designs
4) Eco-friendly Anchor Stamped Ring Set by Lovestruck Soul
5) Nautical Stacking Bracelet Set by Frosted Wilow
6) Sterling Silver Anchor Bracelet by Maris Sal
7) Interlocking Relationship Quarters by Name Coins
8) Brass Anchor Cuff by Eagle Rowe

Productively Unproductive

Being laid up on the couch for a week can really hinder your productivity. Not only was I not productive for work, but I was seriously not productive at all! I did make a bit of jewelry which was definitely fun and needed! But other than that, I sat on my butt and watched every murder show on Investigation Discovery that I could... Until Thursday night. After a week of being laid up on the couch, I decided I'd had enough. I wasn't ready to go back to work yet (even though I did go back to sit through meetings on Friday), but I was well enough to drive to hang out with Lauren.

I was laying on my couch and had to ask her how the heck she stayed motivated to do stuff and she said she didn't. A strange conversation about productivity and blogging ensued. This was the result.

I drove out to visit Lauren, we sat around her house, talked about blogging and ate guacamole. Unproductiveness at its finest! We decided that since we were talking about blogging together, we were being productive. It's how we justify things to the boys.

So let me ask, how do you keep yourself motivated to be productive?

Fabulous Feathers

This What I Want Wednesday comes at a seriously odd hour! I've been working my little buns off trying to get caught up after being gone from work so long and the rest of my life is suffering. My bloggie bestie, Lauren, will attest to the fact that I have numerous posts lined up and just no way to get them up on time... That being said, this week is all about beautiful feathers!

I've been obsessed with feathers forever! They're just so pretty and thanks to the new boho trend, feathers are everywhere! I can get metal feathers, leather feathers and, of course, real feathers. So today, I'm sharing some of my top favorite feather pieces with you guys.

1) Leather Cut Cuff by Ashley Ann Bennett
2) Verdegris Feather Ring by Hanging By a Thread
3) Turquoise Leather Feather Necklace Dipped in Gold by Love at First Blush
4) Sequoia Nights Tribal Feather Ear Cuff by Spirit Tribe
5) Gold Feather Initial Necklace by Tydesign
6) Teal Feather Necklace by G. Biloba

What I Want Wednesday : Marvelous Metallics

I've decided that it's time to add another daily feature. Why? Because Wednesday just seems to be a rough day for me and I want to dream about what I want to see in my closet/jewelry box. So, today, we'll start this What I Want Wednesday (Yes, that's WIWW, but I feel strange taking pictures of myself to show off my outfits) trend off with Marvelous Metallics!

A lot of jewelry now days is some crazy statement bubble necklaces and that's honestly just not my thing. I'm a metal girl! I love seeing metallic elements for jewelry. I love mixing metals and just chunking it up. Don't get me wrong, a bead here and there is totally cool, but I want to see the amazing metal working! This might be due to my metalsmithing, but whatever the reason, I love metal! And I think you'll all love these 8 metal pieces too!

1) Anchor Necklace by Rooted
2) Steampunk Gear Necklace by JBDesigns
3) Plated Silver Fork Ring by WaterSigns
4) Silver Paisley Earrings by ArtistiKat
5) Chevron Necklace by Luci Bell Jewelry + Designs
6) 10g Eternal Earrings by Maya Jewelry (sold by Born This Way Body Arts)
7) Sun Disc Earrings by Embergrass Jewelry
8) Leather Feather Earrings by Bohemi+Chic

On a side note, I've noticed that metalworking seems to be dying for the "hand made" crowd. Most metal jewelry you find is mass produced and it's a bit sad.

Another thing I've noticed through doing this... I've become oddly obsessed with rings! Maybe it's because I can wear up to 10 at a time?

What's your favorite of the 8 pieces?

PS, all accessories that are included today and will be included in future posts will be handmade. I'm a huge advocate for handmade accessories.
