How To Make Dangle Earrings and a Surprise!

Happy Tuesday!! As promised, today we have a jewelry tutorial AND a giveaway! Let's start with the jewelry tutorial and then meet the lovely ladies behind the giveaway!

This one starts exactly the same as yesterday, so you'll need the same materials, but around step 4, things start changing, so I'll copy and paste the same parts and then start adding on! If you haven't read How to Make a Charm yet though, I highly recommend doing that before starting here.

What you'll need:

  • One headpin. This can be any type of metal you like. I prefer to working sterling, as you can probably tell... Base metal is okay to use for this, but it's very stiff, so it's hard to wrap. I would stick with at least a silver plated headpin.
  • One bead. Well, you can't make a bead charm without a bead, so pick your bead. It would be easier to stick with a more symmetric shape for this first go.
  • One pair of flush cutters. You want to get the best set of flush cutters you can because if you don't, your charm could catch on your hair or your clothes... Not fun!
  • One pair of round nose pliers. Any pair will do. They don't need to be super awesome. See picture 3 for what the round nose pliers look like. Bail forming pliers would be okay as well.
  • Two pairs of other pliers. As you can tell, I prefer my bent needle nose and my flat nose pliers. Whichever ones you have lying around the house will likely be okay. Just make sure they don't have ridges in them or you'll mar the metal. One set needs to be either long nose or needle nose (bent or straight, doesn't matter).

1) You gotta decide on what kind of bead you want! For this tutorial, I used a 4mm Swarovski bicone. They're really popular, you can find them at vastly inflated prices at any Joann or Michael's stores and they are a really easy bead to learn on. (I prefer to get my retail Swarovski on ArtBeads) Place your bead on your headpin (yea, you didn't see that one coming, did you??)

2) Grab your needle nose (or long nose) pliers and place them flush to the top of the bead. bend the excess head pin over to make a crimp in the metal.

3) Grab your round nose pliers and form a loop at the top of your crimp. This is the loop that we can put on to things. Stay tuned because tomorrow, I'll show you how to actually attach the charm to something that will not open!

4) Finish the loop. Here's where we change a bit. Now, instead of wrapping right away, we're going to attach our loop to our dangles. You'll start with one bead at the end that is already wrapped, but after that, you'll have to attach the beads. Slide the open loop on to the closed loop without damaging the loop that you made.

5 and 6) Now that it's on there, start wrapping away! Finish the looping in the same way that we did yesterday.

7) Continue until you've added all the beads you want. You can add 2 or 200 (so long as you have ears of steel), so be creative! When you add your last bead, add your earring wire to the end and keep wrapping.

8) You're done! Look at you! You made your first set of earrings!! And I must say, they look FABULOUS!
